Christmas Edition

It seems just a very short time ago that we were preparing for Christmas 2004, and yet a lot has happened since we did that.

Tripos IT has lost and found a number of engineers. We have moved office. iPods and other MP3 players have taken over the world. Everyone has an even smaller digital camera. The economy has remained viable, even if the outlook is for a bit of a slow down.

And throughout all of this, we have all managed to keep our businesses and lives on an even keel.

We now need to ensure we do it again next year, so below are a couple of small pointers towards tasks you may perform during your quiet time to bring benefits later in the year.

¦  Archive old work to CD or DVD. If you want to archive to tape, remember that tape retention is not guaranteed over 18 months. But CD and DVD are not guaranteed for ever.

¦  Once archived, remove the material from your hard disk to avoid problems with the size of your backup in future.

¦  Clean up the internals of your servers, removing dust and dirt from fans, filters heat sinks and printed circuit boards etc.

¦  Run a cleaning tape through your backup tape drive.

Enough of work. Have a happy Christmas, and all the best for 2006 from all of us.

Some light hearted moments

Every year, we are exposed to a number of circumstances which we treasure. We would like to share a couple of them with you.

¦  A phone call. “I am just about to leave my office for lunch and my machine has started to beep continuously. Should I just turn it off, because it sounds like it might blow up.”

“ What do you have on your desk?”

“Just my keyboard.”

“What do you have on your keyboard?”

“My handbag.”

¦  Another phone call. “Every time I click the virus update icon, it reports that the update has failed. I am worried about attaching to the Internet before I have downloaded the latest virus protection!!!!”
