Christmas is Here Again

2004 is nearly over and the summer holiday season is almost upon us again. The festive season is beginning to gather pace and will be over before we know it. Another year is behind us and there may be just a little time for us to reflect on what 2004 has meant to each of us.

Tripos IT

During the year, we changed our trading name from Tripos Group to Tripos IT. We felt that the new name would better reflect what our business is all about. It says very clearly that we are an IT consultancy rather than a Group, whatever that might be.

But we were a little cautious about placing our business in a box which says just IT. As you can see from the left hand side bar, our services cover all facets of the modern office.

As mentioned in our last newsletter, we continually search the technology marketplace for products and services which will be of value to our clients. We attend training to build our skills, we implement some products in our own office to prove their worth, and then we talk to our clients about what we feel the item can do for them.

Here are just some of the items we have evaluated this year.

?   Alternative Document management software to make your precious productions more easily available.

?   Voice Over IP telephony to capitalise on the Internet to reduce call charges on long distance calls and provide additional facilities in house.

?   Linux as a principal server operating system to improve stability, security and return on investment.

?   Tablet PCs for mobile users, making your handwritten note available and enabling you to take your office wherever you want.

?   Digital dictation and dictation management software to allow you to better create typescript at lower cost.

?   Digital imaging with scanners and cameras, and ways to embed these technologies within the modern business to enhance service or productivity.

?   Wireless networking and shared ADSL broadband Internet connection to reduce setup cost and improve service.

?   Alternatives to using Outlook or Outlook Express for long term storage of e-mails, making them easier to find and improving the performance of your e-mail client.

?   A number of security measures for laptop and notebook computers to keep your enterprise information out of the wrong hands.

Goodness. What a list. And that is not all of it, by any means.

We look forward to another challenging year in 2005, and to assisting you with your office enhancements and system upgrades.

Some Ditties from the Field

While the past year has been a busy one, there have, as usual, been the lighter moments. Like:

?   The recent occasion where a little bit of drag and drop placed all the businesses data files where they should not have been. And it was end of month!

?   One of our people asked a client to send a copy of the CD-ROM which would not load on her machine. Two days later, a beautiful photocopy of the CD arrived with a note asking how this could possibly help.

?   The machine that would not recognise the CD-ROM, which was in the drive wrong way up. Our confused client said, after we had suggested turning the CD over the right way, “Surely the drive has to read the title from the printed side?”

?   And the old chestnut was heard again. “Where is the ANY key, please?”

?   “Why do I have to be on the Internet to send and receive e-mails?”

?   “Where can I do a short course so I can learn as much as you know about computers?”

(Reply: “There is not a course short enough to meet your needs.”) Editor

?   “How long will my machine last?”

?   And finally, a transcript from a “wrong number”.

The caller sounded like she was definitely 60+, or maybe 70+.

Tripos Support - "Good afternoon. Tripos. David speaking."

Old Lady - "Yes. Umm, could I have some brochures on your pre-paid funeral plans please?"

Tripos Support - "Umm, I think you must have the wrong number. You've called 8272 7555."

Old Lady - "Oh, well, bugger me dead - sorry about that!" (I kid you not - that’s what she said. Funny when you think about it, seeing as she's asking for info on funeral plans!!! Editor)

Tripos Support - "That’s okay, have a lovely afternoon"

Old Lady - "I will when I can organise my husband’s funeral arrangements. Its not long now before he passes away." (Again I'm not kidding here!)

Tripos Support - "Well, I am sorry to hear that."

Old Lady - "Its okay. He's had a good innings." (David Kenyon would love the cricket terminology!)

Tripos Support - "That’s good to hear."

Old Lady - "Thank you for being so polite, you have a nice day now."

Tripos Support - "My pleasure, you too. Goodbye."

Old Lady - "Bye."

Holiday Hours

The Tripos IT office will be open with a skeleton staff each working day over the Christmas New Year holiday period. Short hours may be worked if the day is quiet, but the office phone will be redirected to David Estcourt Hughes’ mobile phone if the office becomes unmanned for any reason.

Please do not hesitate to call us for assistance if a need arises.
